Sirsa

Sirsa was named after a king Saras who ruled here during 1300 AD. It is believed by the historians that Raja 'Saras' built a fort here and the name Sirsa is derived from the very word 'Saras'. According to some historians it is named Sirsa because it was on the bank of river 'Saraswati'. But as a district Sirsa came into existence in 1975 on 26 of August as eleventh district of Haryana.

During Firoj Shah Tuglak it was included in Hissar division, but during Sher Shah's region it was a part of Delhi State. In 1781 Sirsa and Fatehabad were given to 'Bhatti's' and it remain with them upto 1810. Sirsa was ruined by great famine of 1783 but it was re-established by the 'Bhatti's' in 1818. British commander Col. James Sniker defeated Bhatti king Khan Bahadur and Nawab of Sirsa, Jabta Khan. Sirsa which was a centre of trade and thickly populated was once again ruined in 1937. It was again established by Cap. Ghorswai in 1838 and remained district head quarter from 1858 to 1884.

Now Sirsa has an area of 4,276 sq.k.m. and there are 323 villages in this district.
